How to Play Solitaire: Klondike Rules

Klondike is the familiar seven-column Solitaire game. You organize a shuffled deck by moving cards between columns, uncovering face-down cards, and building four same-suit foundations from ace to king.

A legal move from our Turn 1 deal #42. Tableau moves descend in alternating colors; a foundation starts with an ace.

Understand the starting layout

The game uses one 52-card deck without jokers. Seven tableau columns contain one through seven cards respectively. Only the top card of each column begins face up. The remaining 24 cards form the stock. Cards drawn from the stock go onto the waste pile.

Above the tableau are four foundations. Each starts with an ace and grows in the same suit: ace, two, three, and so on through king. Foundation symbols are visual guides; an empty foundation can accept an ace, and the first ace establishes its suit.

Build descending columns in alternating colors

In the tableau, place a card one rank lower than the destination card and in the opposite color. For example, a red queen can go on a black king. Either hearts or diamonds is red; either clubs or spades is black.

A complete face-up sequence can move together if every adjacent pair follows this alternating-color, descending rule. You cannot move a sequence that includes a face-down card. When a move uncovers a hidden card, this game turns that card over automatically.

  1. Select a face-up card or the first card of a legal sequence.
  2. Look for a highlighted legal destination.
  3. Click the destination, or drag the selected card there.
  4. Check whether the move exposes a new card or enables a foundation move.

Empty columns and kings

Only a king may begin an empty tableau column. You may move a king alone or a valid sequence beginning with a king. An empty column cannot receive a queen simply because it has no cards.

Making an empty column is most helpful when you have a king ready to use it. A king that uncovers hidden cards is often more useful than a king already at the bottom of another otherwise empty sequence.

Use the stock and waste

Choose Turn 1 to expose one stock card per draw, or Turn 3 to expose up to three. Only the top card of the waste may be played. In Turn 3, the other newly drawn cards become playable only when the cards above them leave the waste.

When the stock is empty, select it again to recycle the waste. This game allows unlimited passes and preserves the order when recycling. Moving a card out of the waste can change which cards appear on top during later Turn 3 passes.

Move cards to the foundations

An empty foundation accepts an ace. After that, add the next rank in the same suit. A two of hearts can go on an ace of hearts, but not on an ace of diamonds. Move only one card at a time to a foundation.

You can move the top card of a foundation back to the tableau when it obeys the normal descending, alternating-color rule. That can release a useful supporting card. Auto-finish becomes available when the stock and waste are empty and all remaining tableau cards are face up; it moves available cards to foundations.

Win, save, or replay

You win when all 52 cards are in the four foundations. Hints suggest a legal forward move, not a guaranteed winning plan. Some random deals cannot be won, and some playable deals can become blocked by earlier decisions.
